A day celebrated for Ostomates: Ordinary people with different zest of life

Ostomates, a term for the patient who underwent ostomy where the way for the normal discharge of body waste has been diverted by creating an opening in the body over tummy. World Ostomy Day is celebrated to show awareness for ostomates. DEW Medicare and Trinity Hospital celebrated the day on Sunday the 02nd October 2016, which was attended by 25 ostomates with their care takers and family members. Mrs. Aasawari Shenolikar, Chief Editor Twinkle Star, The Hitavada, was the Chief Guest of the programme. Dr. Sudhir Tomey, an experienced Gastro Intestinal surgeon made people aware about ostomy, need of ostomy and how the society can be made aware about the same.

The key role of Enterostomal Therapy Nurse (ET Nurse) was briefed and three city ET Nurses, Mr. Surendra Pingle, Ms. Mohini Retar and Mr. Amit Yatkallewar, were felicitated with Certificate of appreciation for their outstanding contribution in management of ostomy patients. The most fascinating part of the event was the views and experience shared by the ostomates, the movement of the life from being a part of stressed full life post-surgery to being a part of joyful life after adapting into the situation. Ostomates who underwent surgery 15 to 20 years back were also felicitated. Mrs. Aasawari Shenolikar stressed the need of self-help group and the requirement of more such awareness camp. Subsequent workshop was arranged, where the queries and problems of ostomates were discussed with Dr. Sudhir Tomey. Dr. Shailesh Pitale, Dr. Sanjiv Bais, Dr. Sudhakar Dhondge made their gracious presence. Renowned doctors, Dr. Vandana Tomey, Dr. Dhananjay Kane, Dr. Gopal Gujar, Dr. Nirmal Patle also made their presence and contributed to make the event grand success.

On this occasion, a Central India Ostomy Association (CIOA) has been formed, Mr. D.K. Chokhani was elected as the President of the committee, Mr. Ram Aswani and Mr. Vasant Bhusari were elected as Secretary and Legal Advisor respectively. Committee members also include 05 male and 02 female executives.
